Peter Jackson’s BAFTA-nominated They Shall Not Grow Old is an extraordinary and groundbreaking documentary that has taken the nation by storm.
A remarkable and impressive feat of restored and colourised archive footage, catch a glimpse of the First World War as you’ve never seen it before. With moving imagery of the day-to-day lives of British soldiers on the frontline, They Shall Not Grow Old demands to be seen on the big screen.
This screening is subtitled for hard of hearing.
We’re pleased to be welcoming local historian John Hickman who will be introducing the film and presenting an opportunity for the audience to see rare and unpublished photographs from the era:
Peter Jackson’s remarkable film vividly shows the life of soldiers on the Western Front during WW I. While aware of increasing hardship of the citizenry; we see little of the military life of those who joined the colours at home.
In introducing the film, local historian, John Hickman will briefly talk about the military here in Croydon and South Norwood during the terrible conflict of 1914 - 1918. His talk will be illustrated with local images during and immediately after the Great War from the Croydon Natural History & Scientific Society collection, most of them not publicly seen for a century.
