Join us on the fourth Wednesday of every month for Odyssey Film Club, a special strand designed to shine a light on cinema from around the world.
This month we take a journey to Japan for Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Palme d’Or-winning and Oscar-nominated story of an unconventional family in Shoplifters.
A poor Tokyo family living off petty crime, low paying jobs and their grandmother’s pension welcome 5 year old Yuri, a young girl who fears returning to her own family and facing more physical abuse. She finds love and comfort in her new adopted family, until an unforeseen incident upsets their delicate loving balance and their darkest secrets are exposed.
This tender portrait of a family forced to confront their past is a heart-warming tale about the importance of choosing your own bonds rather than those tied to you by blood.
We're pleased to be welcoming David Dent, local film and media writer and co-ordinator of the West Norwood Free Film Festival, who will be introducing the film. You can follow David's writing here.
