Dir. Brian Welsh • 2019 • UK • Comedy Drama • 101 mins • Cert 18

Set in Scotland in 1994, Beats follows two teenage friends as they go on one last night out together.

Jonno (newcomer Cristian Ortega) is about to move to a safer suburban area with his mother and step father while his best friend Spanner (Lorn MacDonald) is left to the grimmer prospect of staying in his small town under the guardianship of his abusive older brother.

Navigating class and social inequalities, and set against the electric backdrop of 90s Scottish rave culture, director Brian Welsh delivers a funny and bittersweet coming-of-age shot story, entirely in black-and-white.

We’re pleased to be screening short film Paul is Dead, directed by George Moore, before the main feature. Find out more about our Shorts In The South initiative here.
