The Rape of Recy Taylor

  • Harris Academy South Norwood 2 Cumberlow Avenue London SE25 6AE (map)

Dir. Nancy Buirsky • 2017 • US • Documentary • 91 mins • Cert 15

Described by The Independent as a “quietly devastating” documentary, the story of African American woman, Recy Taylor, is harrowing to say the least. On her way home from church, Recy was raped by six white men, in Alabama in 1944. What made this attack worse was the lack of indictment of the men who confessed to authorities that they assaulted her.

Recy and her story have become iconic in the struggle for civil rights, and they particularly  resonate now in a newfound age of revolution as seen by the the #MeToo and #BlackLivesMatter movements.
